Saturday was Dory Day's in Pacific City. This is an annual celebration honoring the small fishing boat called a dory that is a big part of Pacific City history. They start the day with a pancake breakfast put on by the Kiwanis club. At 11:00 is the parade down their main street.

We really like small town festivities like this. It reminded us of Los Alamos Old Day's that we have gone to with the Blankenbillers, Smiths, Gehrs, Meades, and Hills.
You can see that the entire street is lined with people cheering as the dories are pulled by. The dory queen is sitting on the front of the boat in this picture.

The boats are decorated and candy is thrown to the kids on the street.

The theme for this years festival was "Glory of the Dory"

A lot of the boats were decorated up in the red, white and blue. The driver of the truck pulling this boat had a President Obama mask on, and the passenger had a Governor Romney mask on. They do have a sense of humor around here!

Of course what good would a parade be without horses?
|
OK, so they aren't horses but it was cool |
Yes there really were horses. There was a little wagon being pulled behind the horses. That is to clean up after them.

Horses |
After the parade we went to Cape Kiwanda where the vender booths were to be. Turned out not many were there. We did have an elephant ear though which is a flat fry bread with cinnamon and powdered sugar on it.
You can also drive out on the beach. In the picture below is another Haystack Rock.

There is a ramp that takes you down to the beach. To the left is for driving or parking. To the right is for launching the Dory's. You can see two boats coming in to the beach.

Ramp |
For some reason here in Oregon people in 2 wheel drive vehicles think they should be able to drive on the beach. Usually they get away with it. You can see mommy van's in the above picture. However this toyota van did not get away with it. Patty took the picture just as the tow strap snapped. You can see it recoiling.

Snapped tow strap |
They regrouped and were able to pull him out. There was damage to the front of his van.
Here you can see the dories that were in the surf being towed out. They just run them up onto the beach and back the trailers up to them. They use the tow strap from the trailer to winch them up to pull them out.

You may remember the other day we walked down to the beach and I said we found we could drive there. Here are a couple of pictures of the trail down to the beach.

Beach Road |
It seems that water must run down through here because it was real muddy.

Beach road II |
We drove down on the beach and just turned around and came back out. The tide was kinda high and so there was no gain staying there. A guy in a Nissan followed us out.

Leaving the beach |
It was quite a busy Saturday. We have enjoyed it here at Pacific City. We still have one day left and then it's on to Newport!
God Bless you,
