Like the wings of an Eagle!

July 9

Today Patty finally got her Bowpickers Fish and Chips in Astoria!

Bowpicker Fish & Chips
Bowpickers is a sea food restaurant that only serves one thing, fish and chips! As you can see it is in an old boat on a trailer, but is the busiest restaurant in Astoria. It is known to have the best Fish & Chips on the North Coast. Our great friend Scott Blankenbiller can attest to it!

They use tuna fish steak for the fish which is unlike anyone else around. You can see in the above picture the line which is normal. There are stairs that take you up to the window that you order from and then they fry them up for you and you walk back down at the stern.

We decided to take a drive today into Washington and then take the Wahkiakum ferry back into Oregon at Westport.

We noticed there was a historic site sign saying there was a covered bridge. Of course we took the road 2 miles to see it.

The Grays River Covered Bridge is the only covered bridge in Washington State that is still used by the public on a public road. It is 155.5 feet long and 14 feet wide.

Here we are driving through the bridge. We really enjoy stuff like this! But the really cool thing was yet to come!

Driving through the bridge
We continued driving on Washington Highway 4. We came to a bridge with a trestle on it. I happened to look up and saw a HUGE nest on top. An EAGLE nest!!!!

Eagles Nest!
As we got closer I saw a Bald Eagle in the nest!!! Wahoo! We turned around and came back to see it. What a thrill! You can see the eagle sitting on top of the nest!

We took a bridge to Puget Island. From here you take the Wahkiakum ferry across the Columbia River to Westport, Oregon. The Ferry cost $5.00 for an auto or truck.

Puget Island
The original ferry was called the Puget Island Ferry.

Here's our ride coming over to pick us up.

Wahkiakum ferry
The ferry goes across the Columbia River and into an inlet to the town of Westport, Oregon. Here is the dock it pulls straight into.

From here it was just about 20 miles back to Astoria. Look at the fog bank at the Astoria bridge.

It was a great day today! We ended up in the Jacuzzi with our friends Lari and Doug. They are leaving tomorrow heading up to Washington near Seattle. We will keep in touch with them and most assuredly will meet up with them on the road again. See you again dear brother and sister!!

We also met another brother in Astoria today by the name of Alan Mushen. It was a pleasure. We will try to keep in contact with him as well. He is a teacher in Cannon Beach, just south of Seaside where we are staying.

That's it for today,
God Bless all,
Brian and Patty
