Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki and Wukoki Pueblo

We continued our Monday adventure by going to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
We stopped at the Aa Lava flow trail. It is very interesting the way the lava flowed in this area.

Aa Lava Flow Trail
It is interesting that trees still grow in the lava.

Lava Trail
This volcano erupted about 1000 years ago. Really not that long ago.

Lava Flow
There were two lava flow trails. This one was only about 1/4 mile. Because we had a lot still to see today we chose the shorter one.

Aa Lava
The road from Sunset Crater to Wupatki Pueblo as about 15 miles.

Wupatki Pueblo
These are also the Sinagua Indians. The Sinagua's near Cottonwood are the Southern Sinagua and the Sinagua near Flagstaff are the Northern Sinagua.

Wupatki Pueblo
There was about a 3/4 mile loop to see all of Wupatki Pueblo. There were approximately 100 rooms here.

Wupatki Pueblo
It is amazing to us how much history there is here in Arizona! Also how well preserved everything is.

Wupatki Walkway
On the bottom of this was a ball court. It was used for games and probably a meeting place.

More Wupatki
Next to the ballcourt was this blowhole. It was in the 80's so the nice 50 degree wind coming out really felt good. Who knew we would have air conditioning in the desert!!

Wupatki Blowhole
We left Wupatki and went another couple miles to the Wukoki Pueblo.

Wukoki Ruins sign
The ranger at Wupatki told us this was her favorite ruin.

Wukoki
This was just about a 1/2 mile trail. Of course after hiking down Walnut Canyon and everything else we had done today we were getting tired.

Wukoki Pueblo
I liked the way the sun prismed off the tower on this picture Patty took!

Sun Prisms
This is one of the dwelling that you could climb on and in. Here is Patty looking through the window!

Patty in window
I took a Panoramic of the Pueblo. Just learning some new functions of my phone.

Pano of Wukoki Pueblo
This picture was taken on the roof of the Pueblo.

Top of the Pueblo
Taken on top of Wukoki Pueblo You can see the San Francisco Peaks behind Patty. There was still a lot of snow on the peaks.

San Francisco Peaks
Here is the trail heading back to the truck. It was quite a busy day on Monday!

Trail to parking lot
We have seen what we wanted to see in Arizona. It has been a GREAT month here. We are excited about our next adventures in New Mexico and Colorado.

Thanks for reading the blog,

God Bless you,
Brian and Patty
